Who is Our God? (Exploring Exodus)

So unlike my posts with Genesis, I am going to be going back and forth with chapters/verses in Exodus because so much of it relates back to itself that it makes more sense to be merged into its own place than to write it chronologically.

Genesis is our introduction to everything, the start of the start. Exodus is a wild ride compared to Genesis. It is through Exodus that we learn who our God is, the absolute ten commandments, and truly begin to learn about our relationship with God.

Who is He?

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. – Exodus 3:14

God is He, and He is God. It only takes faith to believe that He is Almighty. To surrender your pride as man and acknowledge that His Word is our word, as He created us.

Our God is kind, but it can be hard to believe that. In Exodus 4:11, when “the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?” it puts into question His goodness. Why to this day are people – children – born blind or deaf? It is easy to argue that God is punishing us. I personally believe that God can create and He can destroy (Genesis 6) but he cannot reverse. This would explain why God “restarted” the world in Gen 6 by flooding it. There’s no restart button to hit here. All that God creates is permanent. He does have the power to destroy them, but then He would break His promise from Genesis 11 and no longer be our trustworthy God.

The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. – Exodus 14:14

I highlighted this instantly and before even really acknowledging that it’s the rather popular “you need only be still” scripture. Again, our God is kind and there for us, we only need to trust and stay in our faith to see and hear Him.

God is our guide to a Holy life, He does not push us there; only guides.

Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thy hast redeemed: thou has guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. – Exodus 15:13

Sometimes we can feel distant from God, and wonder why He is not pushing us closer to Him. Usually, that’s on us though. When we open our bible’s we are in conversation with God, when we sit in prayer we are speaking directly to God, and when we look to the heavens we are looking to God. If we are not seeking God in our everyday lives, then of course we are going to feel distant from Him. It is a relationship after all – we have to do our part too. But God won’t ever push us to Him; He won’t make us feel like we have to be with Him. We are guided to God through His Word and our actions and beliefs in Him.
